Bicycle Commuting Made Easy

 by Jerry Solomon

Have you ever considered making your daily commute to work by bicycle rather than by car? If so, then please hold that thought! The benefits to you and the environment will be substantial. If you rode a bike to work only one day a week you would reduce your environmental impact by 20%. That’s the equivalent of buying a hybrid car, only at a far lower cost. Rather than jostling through morning traffic (I know, its Ashland, but we do have traffic snarls nonetheless) how would you like to be cruising along, enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of the new day? Yes, its a wonderful alternative vision for commuting but what about the disadvantages? Well, let’s look at those and see how the advent of the electric bike is the solution to most of them.

The first complaint people have when considering biking to work is the idea of arriving all hot and sweaty at the start of your day. With an ebike that’s simply not a problem anymore. The power assistance of the motor means you’ll be working far less at the pedals to get from point A to B. Do you have sizable hills along your daily route? No problem, the ebike flattens those out into an easy ride as well. So, take it extra easy in the morning to keep your ‘freshness factor’ intact, and then on the way home, if you want to push it some more to get a bona fide workout, go for it.

The next concern people have is that they don’t have the time to devote to riding instead of driving. On an ebike that’s simply not the case either. Quite often friends and I will travel from one place to another in town – me on my ebike and them in their cars. Almost always I’m the first to arrive at the next place ahead of them. Following all the rules of the road I can traverse town faster, park my bike right in front of our destination, and be inside getting comfortable before all the drivers come through the front door.

The third biggest concern about an ebike is the cost; a quality electric bike will cost anywhere from $1600 to $4600, with the majority falling somewhere in the mid-$2000 range. That’s a lot to pay for a bike some say. Have you been in a quality bike shop and looked at prices for the better offerings they have? Have you priced a new or reliable used car lately? Suddenly, an ebike looks like a bargain in comparison. How about operating costs, maintenance, and insurance? It costs about five cents to fully charge an electric bike, and that charge will take you anywhere from 15 to 50 miles depending on the bike. Did you get that? One nickel for perhaps a week’s worth of riding. Maintenance is no greater than a regular bike, and insurance or licensing is not required. Now that’s affordable transportation!

So, don’t you think its time to reassess your daily commute? Wouldn’t you like to become part of the solution rather than continuing to be part of the problem? Our addiction to fossil fuels must end, sooner than later. We can make a difference however seemingly small…one bike at a time. Come join the two-wheeled revolution!

Winter Hours Are In Effect

Yes, its that time again. Leaves are falling and the temperatures are dropping. Its unfortunate that bicycling takes a back seat for many folks. However, with warm clothing, ebiking can be quite pleasurable in all but the most inclement weather. You know the old problem of trying to dress warm enough for the outside temperature but then overheating once you start pedaling hard on your bike? That becomes a thing of the past on an electric bike; you manage your workout level by the amount of motor assist  in order to prevent overheating. Now you can bundle up to stay warm and truly enjoy the ride.

For me, its time for some of the best riding of the year; tourist traffic is gone and nature is on display in all her glory. There’s something rewarding about dressing warm and heading out into what might otherwise be considered a lousy weather day. Even a dreary, chilly, rainy day becomes an adventure when seen, smelled, and felt from the saddle of an ebike.

So, you’ll find us at the shop a little less while we’re taking advantage of slower times to get out and enjoy more of what this Ashland Electric Bikes adventure is all about. You can come see us from now through the winter:

Electric Bikes Change Lives

by Jerry Solomon

If you’ve heard about electric bikes and are wondering about their value and/or necessity in the overall scheme of things, consider the following stories. They’re about real people that I’ve had the pleasure to work with through the years. Their stories are compelling and inspirational:

Polio took its toll on Clint at an early age. In spite of that, in his early seventies when we first met, he was accomplishing more than many men half his age. However, one thing he couldn’t still manage was the combination of strength and balance necessary to ride a bike. It had been many decades since he was able to enjoy one his greatest passions. With patience and determination he succeeded in test riding one of my first custom ebikes. The bike sold itself! As we completed the transaction he related his story to me. With tears in both of our eyes I listened and when he finished he proudly announced that he would be taking a bike ride with his wife that night…the first in many many years. They now travel throughout the west with their bikes in tow, taking sunset rides together again.

Christy was born with a debilitating condition that required her to use a walker to move about. When she came to see me in her early teens she had never experienced the joy of riding a bicycle. Mom or dad and the family car were her only option for leaving the house. We set her up onto an electric trike and proceeded with a series of test rides, first with me riding on the bike with her, and next by walking along beside her. With each lap around the parking lot she became more animated and enlivened. By the third lap I couldn’t keep up with her anymore! The timid, hesitant girl that first climbed out of the car was now smiling and emboldened in a way that every teenager deserves to feel. She now rides around her neighborhood exploring the world with a degree of autonomy and independence that she never experienced before.

Jerry has been riding bikes almost as long as he’s been walking. However, years of extreme mountain biking, telemark skiing, and a couple of motorcycle mishaps have taken their toll on his body. One of his hips has a handful of issues that can only be addressed via a full hip replacement. At fifty five years young he’s not ready to go down that path just yet; the expected lifespan of an artificial hip is far shorter than what he has planned for himself. Unfortunately it is impossible for him to ride a regular bike anymore without a great deal of pain. However, his electric bike allows him to ride almost daily, twelve months of the year, enjoying one of his greatest pleasures and maintaining his commitment to a low impact lifestyle.

For these three people and many more, electric bikes are not some frivolous extravagance of the lazy and rich; they are an opportunity for freedom, mobility, and adventure. Its an eco-friendly way to move in the world to accomplish the things we need and want to do. Whether its personal challenges or planetary concerns that motivate you, electric bikes can help you realize your goals. Come test ride the future – its here now!
